Merino Possum Knitwear & Yarns
In the 1980’s, the New Zealand government began to fund research in developing a yarn that would combine the warmth and lightness of fur with the warmth and lightness of merino wool.
The challenge was firstly to combine wool fibre (which has hooks) with fur fibre (sleek and slippery with no hooks at all). When that hurdle was overcome they only had to make that fibre as light as possible, as strong as possible, washable of course, able to take a dye and and not likely to pill or shed.
